A Good Story, Great Book or a Rare Find?

I started reading as a little girl and have loved it ever since. The first "real" book I read was "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret" by Judy Blume. I was mesmerized because back then we had to get permission to read this book. I was thinking 'Why do we have to get permission? We're reading it in school.' That was until I read it that I understood. I felt so grown-up, if you will, but still a child. This book allowed me to use my imagination; putting me and my friends in the story--making it come alive.

I have since grown and matured in age and reading materials (lol). Although sometimes I am in the mood for just a good story.

As an avid reader, I have read hundreds (if not thousands) of books-a lot of them are just a good story, some were not even worthy of my time, and then there are the rare few that have a prolific impact in my life. These are the ones that I can read over and over and over because I learn something each time I read it and I fall in love with reading again.

Number one on my list of rare and great books--the GREATEST ever written in my opinion--is The Bible. I prefer the King James Version. I can never tire of reading it and I learn something every single time I read it. It could be a word, a verse, a chapter or the entire book. That is what is so profound!

Number 2: Anything by James Langston Hughes! He was truly before his time. He wrote sixteen books of poems, two novels, three collections of short stories, four volumes of "editorial" and "documentary" fiction, twenty plays, children's poetry, musicals and operas, three autobiographies, a dozen radio and television scripts and dozens of magazine articles. In addition, he edited seven anthologies. He is truly my favorite poet! Can you tell?

Number 3 would be: The Color Purple. I love, love, love this book. When I first read it, I didn't understand it. I read it again and it became clearer. Reading it again, I finally understood it. It's so deep. It gets down to you core. I read it again recently, and am still in awe of Allison Walker! Her writing is so real that it's unreal.

Number 4: All books written by Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou are a must read!

Since I am always on the look out for a good story, great book or rare find, I would love to hear some of your literary experiences. Who knows your good story can be my rare find and vice a versa! Please feel free to explore these links and post some of your own. I am an open book!

The Blogging Virgin

Until recently, I was a virgin to blogging…you know reading topics but not participating-kind of like not going all the way (wink). Now that my cherry has been popped, I am in love! What was I thinking? What took me so long to blog? I am fulfilled multiple times by giving and receiving—so much so that I created my own (Eyeovthestorm: Raw But Classy). I know that there are many other blogging virgins out there. What are you waiting for? Don’t be afraid to try something new. Don’t just try one blog and give up! There’s a blog out there for everyone…just keep on looking until you find what appeals to you. Here are a few sites that I log onto daily that are favorites of mine (and may become yours too!):
